Description
The Colourful World of Wild Tomatoes
Wild tomatoes (Solanum pimpinellifolium) are considered the ancestral form of today’s cultivated garden tomatoes. This mix brings together various varieties in a range of colours – from vibrant red and sunny yellow to deeper, more intense shades. A characteristic feature is the abundance of fruit, ranging in size from cherry- to currant-sized, delighting with their sweet and rich flavour. Each plant produces reliably into autumn and often yields several hundred small fruits.
Wild tomatoes originate from the coastal regions of Peru and northern Chile, where they have thrived in the wild for centuries. Even today, they serve as an important genetic resource in breeding programmes – valued for their flavour and natural disease resistance. For home gardeners, they offer the special appeal of original varieties that surprise with colourful diversity and natural resilience.

Sowing & Care of the Wild Tomato Mix
Wild tomatoes are exceptionally easy to care for and are considered resistant to common tomato diseases such as blight. They grow in a bushy habit, do not require pinching out (side shoot removal), and thrive both outdoors in open ground and in large containers. Sowing begins indoors from February/March or directly outdoors from mid-May. Sow the seeds approximately 0.5 cm deep in seed compost, and keep them warm (22–28 °C) and moist – germination usually occurs after 5–10 days. After the last frosts, transplant young plants at a spacing of 80–100 cm. A sunny position and consistent watering encourage high yields.
Depending on the variety, plants reach heights of 1.5 to 2 m and produce abundant clusters of colourful, sweet fruits throughout the season. The result is a decorative and delicious snacking paradise for the whole summer.
