Description
Italy’s Classic Drying Tomato – Compact and Rich in Flavour
'Principe Borghese' is a traditional Italian cherry tomato with a very specific purpose: its small, oval fruits are considered one of the best varieties for making sun-dried tomatoes. Named after the noble Borghese family – a nod to its esteemed status in Italian horticulture – this tomato is prized for its firm texture, crack-resistant skin, and intensely aromatic flavour, which becomes even more concentrated when dried. Traditionally, the fruits are strung up and sun-dried, but they are also excellent when eaten fresh or preserved in oil.
The plant itself is compact, bushy in growth, and highly productive. It typically stays under one metre in height, requires minimal maintenance, and is perfectly suited to outdoor beds, raised planters, or containers. Thanks to its sturdy habit and early ripening, it thrives in sunny, dry locations and is cherished by tomato enthusiasts worldwide for its traditional character and reliable performance.

Semis et entretien
Sowing and Care of the 'Principe Borghese' Variety
Sowing begins indoors from March for early propagation. Seeds should be sown approximately 0.5 to 1 cm deep in low-nutrient seed compost and germinated at temperatures between 20 and 24 °C. The first seedlings usually emerge after 7 to 14 days. Once germinated, the young plants should be pricked out and grown on in a bright position. From mid-May onwards, they can be planted outdoors or into large pots. This variety prefers a full sun location with fertile, well-drained soil. As it branches naturally, regular side-shoot pruning is not necessary. With consistent watering and light feeding, the plant develops a compact, sturdy habit and produces an early and prolonged crop. Harvesting typically begins in July and continues reliably for several weeks, yielding small, firm fruits.
