Description
Wild Tomato Delight with Potato-Like Foliage
'ABC Potato Leaf' is an unusual wild tomato variety of uncertain origin – it is thought to descend from original tomato species native to the coastal regions of Peru or Chile. It became known through the American seed collector Donald Branscomb, who circulated it under this name. The variety combines the character of wild tomatoes with a surprisingly well-balanced fruit flavour.
Its small, waxy fruits grow in decorative, fishbone-shaped trusses and offer a sweet, aromatic taste with a subtle acidity. The plants are vigorous and highly branched, producing an abundance of fruit – ideal for those who enjoy a wilder side of tomato growing. A distinctive feature is the broad, smooth-edged “potato leaf” foliage, otherwise found only in a few cultivated varieties. Thanks to its resilience, strong growth and dependable yields, this variety is particularly well suited to naturalistic gardens, raised beds, or as a snack tomato in containers.

Sowing and Care of the 'ABC Potato Leaf' Variety
From March onwards, this wild tomato variety can be started indoors. Sow the seeds 0.5–1 cm deep in seed compost and keep them consistently warm at 20–24 °C. Germination occurs within 7 to 14 days. After pricking out, grow the seedlings on in a bright position. From mid-May, they can be planted outdoors or into large containers. The plants prefer a full sun position with good airflow and a well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. Due to their wild, spreading growth habit, regular side-shoot pruning is not necessary – the plant produces many lateral shoots naturally. Consistent watering and occasional feeding will support heavy fruit set. Harvesting typically begins in July and continues over an extended period.
