Description
Caribbean Climber with Culinary Potential
The West Indian gherkin (Cucumis anguria), also known as bur gherkin, is an old cultivated plant from the Caribbean and South America, now grown widely in tropical and subtropical regions around the world. Its small, oval fruits are covered in soft, bristly spines, giving them the appearance of tiny hedgehogs or miniature kiwis. The flesh is crisp, juicy, and has a mildly tangy cucumber flavour. The young fruits can be eaten fresh in salads or pickled in vinegar – in South America, they are considered a delicacy. The plant is also used in traditional medicine, valued in part for its diuretic properties.
This vigorous climber is well suited to growing along fences or trellises, grows rapidly, and produces fruit reliably even in warm Central European summers. Its resilience and tolerance to drought make it an appealing choice for adventurous gardeners – a true exotic for gardens or balconies alike.

Semis et entretien
Sowing and Care of the West Indian Gherkin
Sow West Indian gherkin seeds from April indoors for early propagation, or directly outdoors from mid-May once the risk of frost has passed. Seeds should be sown around 1 to 2 cm deep in nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. An ideal germination temperature is between 22 and 28 °C, with germination typically taking 7 to 14 days. Once sprouted, seedlings require plenty of light and should be kept moderately moist, avoiding overwatering. After the last frosts, they can be planted out. A sunny, warm position and a climbing support will encourage healthy growth and good fruit development. Regular watering is important during fruiting, but waterlogging must be avoided. Harvesting begins approximately 60 to 80 days after sowing, once the fruits are still green and tender – this is when they have the best flavour.
